How to Care for Sew-In Hair Extensions

Sew In Hair Extensions 07

Sew-in hair extensions are a fantastic way to instantly add length, volume, and versatility to your hairstyle. However, to keep them looking flawless and to protect your natural hair underneath, you need a solid maintenance routine. Here are ten essential tips to help you get the most out of your sew-ins.

1. Wash Your Hair and Scalp Properly

Keeping your scalp clean is critical for preventing product buildup and maintaining the health of your natural hair. Wash your hair every one to two weeks using a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo. To clean your scalp effectively without tangling the extensions, dilute the shampoo with water, apply it directly to your scalp, and massage gently between the tracks with your fingertips. When rinsing, let the water run straight down the hair.

2. Keep Them Moisturized

Because your extensions don’t receive the natural sebum (oils) produced by your scalp, they rely entirely on you for moisture. After shampooing, use a lightweight conditioner on the lengths of the extensions. Be careful to avoid the base where the wefts are sewn in, as too much slip can loosen the tracks. A light leave-in conditioner or water-based detangling spray is great for daily hydration.

3. Detangle With Care

To keep your extensions looking sleek and to prevent breakage, daily detangling is a must. Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush specifically designed for extensions. Always start at the ends of the hair and slowly work your way up to the roots. Hold the hair near the track while you brush to minimize tension and pulling on your natural hair.

4. Wrap It Up at Night

Never sleep on loose extensions! Before going to bed, loosely braid or twist your hair to keep it from matting and tangling overnight. To minimize friction and lock in moisture, wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf, or sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase. If you have curly extensions, a silk bonnet is perfect for preserving the curl pattern.

5. Go Easy on the Heat

While human hair sew-ins can handle heat styling, excessive temperatures will drastically shorten their lifespan. Always use a high-quality thermal protectant spray before pulling out the hot tools, and keep your flat irons and curling wands on a low heat setting. Whenever possible, opt for heatless styling methods like flexi-rods or overnight braids.

6. Stick to Your Salon Schedule

Leaving a sew-in installed for too long can cause severe matting and tension on your natural hair. Generally, sew-ins should be removed and reinstalled every 6 to 8 weeks. During the lifespan of the install, visit your stylist regularly to tighten any loose tracks, trim split ends, and check on your scalp health.

7. Say No to Heavy Products

Thick creams, heavy oils, and greasy pomades are the enemies of sew-in extensions. They weigh the hair down, cause dullness, and create stubborn buildup at the roots that is difficult to wash out. Stick to lightweight, water-based serums and sheen sprays designed specifically for use on extensions.

8. Prep for Workouts and Swimming

If you lead an active lifestyle, you need to protect your weave. Tie your hair back into a low ponytail or braid before hitting the gym or the pool to prevent severe tangling. If you go swimming, wear a swim cap. If your hair does get wet with chlorine or saltwater, rinse it out immediately to prevent the extensions from drying out, followed by a gentle shampoo and condition.

9. Don’t Neglect Your Natural Hair

Your natural hair is still growing underneath those tracks, and it needs love too! Keep your scalp hydrated by applying a lightweight oil—like tea tree or argan oil—directly to the exposed skin between the tracks. Avoid vigorously scratching your scalp, which can cause irritation and loosen the threads. If your scalp feels excessively itchy or uncomfortable, consult your stylist.

10. Store Them Safely for Reuse

High-quality sew-in extensions can be reused multiple times if cared for properly. Once they are removed, give the bundles a thorough wash and deep condition to strip away any lingering product buildup. Let them air dry completely, and then store them in a silk bag, satin bonnet, or sealed container to keep them dust-free and untangled until your next install.

Quick Cheat Sheet: Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s Don’ts
Do wash and condition every 1-2 weeks. Don’t use shampoos containing harsh sulfates.
Do detangle gently from ends to roots. Don’t pull, tug, or snag the sewn wefts.
Do sleep on silk or satin pillowcases/scarves. Don’t go to sleep with wet or loose extensions.
Do use a heat protectant spray. Don’t use excessively hot styling tools daily.
Do take them out after 6-8 weeks. Don’t leave your sew-in installed for months on end.
