How to Make Hair Extensions From a Wig

Hair extensions are a versatile way to enhance your hairstyle, adding length, volume, and texture. If you have an old or unused wig, you can repurpose it to create custom hair extensions. Instead of discarding it, transform the wig into a DIY hair extension set that suits your specific style needs. Below is a detailed guide on how to make hair extensions from a wig.

1. Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials

Before starting, prepare the tools and materials you’ll need to create hair extensions from a wig. Here’s a checklist:

Materials Tools
Unused wig Scissors
Hair extension clips Needle and thread
Weaving thread Razor or thinning shears
Measuring tape Comb or brush

You can easily find these tools and materials from beauty supply stores or online retailers, such as SISHAIR, which offers high-quality wigs and accessories.

2. Assess the Wig

Inspect the wig to determine its suitability for creating extensions. Wigs made of human hair are ideal since they are more durable and can be styled like natural hair, but synthetic wigs can also work depending on your needs. Look for the following:

  • Hair Quality: Ensure the wig hair is in good condition, free of tangles and excessive shedding.
  • Wig Construction: Check the wig’s wefting and density. Sewn wefts are easier to work with than hand-tied wigs.

3. Remove the Wig’s Wefts

To begin transforming the wig into extensions, carefully dismantle the wig to salvage the hair wefts.

  1. Turn the wig inside out to expose the stitching or weft lines.
  2. Using scissors or a seam ripper, cut along the stitching to detach the wefts from the wig cap. Be cautious to avoid damaging the hair strands.
  3. Lay the detached wefts flat and organize them by length for easier assembly later.

If the wig is hand-tied (knotted into a mesh cap), cut the hair strands near the knots, but be prepared to spend more time assembling them.

4. Measure and Cut Extension Strips

Measure your desired extension lengths based on where you plan to install them on your head. Use a measuring tape for accuracy, and cut the wefts accordingly.

Area of the Head Suggested Weft Length
Bottom layer (nape) 6–8 inches
Middle layers (above ears) 8–12 inches
Top layer (crown area) 10–14 inches

Make sure to cut multiple wefts for each section to achieve your desired fullness.

5. Sew Extension Clips onto the Wefts

Once the wefts are cut, sew clips onto them to turn them into clip-in hair extensions.

  1. Position the clip at the top edge of the weft. The clip’s comb should face the front so it can grip the hair when installed.
  2. Thread a needle with strong weaving thread. Secure the clip by sewing through the holes on its base and looping through the weft.
  3. Repeat this process for each clip, spacing them evenly across the length of the weft. For longer wefts, use 3–4 clips, while shorter wefts may only need 2 clips.

6. Customize the Extensions

After the clips are attached, customize the extensions to suit your preferences.

  • Trim and Shape: Use scissors or thinning shears to trim the extensions for a natural blend with your hair.
  • Style: If the wig is made of human hair, you can curl, straighten, or dye the extensions to match your hair color and texture. For synthetic wigs, use low-heat tools or specialized products designed for synthetic hair.

7. Install and Blend the Extensions

To install the extensions, section your hair horizontally and clip the extensions into place starting from the bottom layer. Ensure the wefts lay flat and are hidden under your natural hair. Use a comb or brush to blend the extensions seamlessly with your natural hair.

If you made extensions from a synthetic wig, take extra care to avoid tangling while blending.

Conclusion

Repurposing an old wig into hair extensions is an affordable and creative way to breathe new life into unused hair pieces. By following the steps above, you can create customized extensions that perfectly suit your style. Whether you’re looking to add volume, length, or a pop of color, this DIY project will save you money while giving you a fresh, versatile look. For the best results, consider starting with a high-quality wig from trusted brands like SISHAIR to ensure your extensions are durable and easy to work with.
