How to Turn a Wig Into Extensions

Transforming a wig into extensions is an ingenious way to repurpose hairpieces, especially when you want to maximize their utility or achieve a more natural look. Extensions made from wigs can be used to add volume, length, or highlights to your natural hair without needing to buy new hair products. This guide will take you through a step-by-step process to achieve this. Whether you’re using synthetic wigs or human hair wigs, such as those from SISHAIR, the process is fairly straightforward with the right tools and techniques.

1. Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, you’ll need to assemble the materials required for the transformation. Here’s a list of essentials:

Material Purpose
Wig Base material for the extensions (SISHAIR wigs are ideal).
Scissors Cutting the wig into wefts.
Hair clips Securing sections of the wig during cutting.
Needle and thread (or glue) Attaching the hair wefts to the extension clips.
Extension clips To secure the extensions in your hair.
Comb Detangling the wig and ensuring smooth sections.
Measuring tape To measure weft lengths for precision.

Having everything ready before starting will make the process smoother and more efficient.

2. Detangle and Prepare the Wig

Before cutting the wig, it’s important to detangle it thoroughly. Use a wide-tooth comb to gently remove any knots or tangles. For human hair wigs, such as those from SISHAIR, you can apply a leave-in conditioner to make the detangling process easier. On the other hand, if you’re using a synthetic wig, avoid excessive pulling as this can damage the fibers.

Once the wig is detangled, place it on a wig stand or lay it flat on a clean, stable surface. This will keep the wig steady while you work.

3. Identify and Cut the Wefts

Wigs are constructed with rows of wefts (the horizontal strips of hair sewn onto a wig cap). To turn the wig into extensions, you will need to carefully cut these wefts from the cap.

  • Begin at the nape of the wig and work your way upward.
  • Use your scissors to carefully cut the thread that attaches the wefts to the wig cap. Be cautious not to cut the hair fibers themselves.
  • Measure each weft as you cut to ensure they are the right length for your desired extension pieces.
Weft Location Ideal Use
Nape wefts Shorter extensions for layering.
Crown wefts Longer extensions for length.

Keep each weft organized by length as you cut to make the next steps easier.

4. Customize the Wefts

Once you’ve removed the wefts, you may need to customize their lengths based on your hairline and styling needs. Use a measuring tape to determine the correct length for each section of your hair. Typically, shorter wefts are used near the nape of your neck, while longer wefts are placed higher up.

If needed, trim the wefts to fit the measurements. For a polished look, fold the cut edges of the weft and sew them to prevent shedding.

5. Attach Clips to the Wefts

The next step is to attach extension clips to the wefts so they can be secured to your natural hair. Here’s how to do it:

  • Lay the weft flat on a surface, with the hair side facing downward.
  • Take the extension clips and sew them onto the top edge of the weft using a needle and thread. Place one clip at each end of the weft and, for larger wefts, add one or two clips in the middle for extra hold.
  • If you prefer a quicker method, you can use a strong adhesive designed for hair extensions, though sewing is generally more durable.
Weft Length Number of Clips Needed
Short (2–3 inches) 1–2 clips
Medium (4–6 inches) 2–3 clips
Long (7–10 inches) 3–4 clips

Ensure the clips open and close smoothly and are securely attached to the wefts.

6. Style the Extensions

Once the clips are attached, your extensions are essentially ready to use. However, styling them can help them blend seamlessly with your natural hair.

  • For synthetic wigs: Use a low-heat styling tool or steam (if the fibers are heat-friendly) to straighten or curl the extensions as desired.
  • For human hair wigs, like SISHAIR’s: Style the extensions with hot tools, such as curling irons or straighteners, just as you would with natural hair.

If the extensions are a different color from your natural hair, consider dyeing or toning them to match. SISHAIR’s human hair wigs can be dyed, making them highly versatile for customization.

7. Attach and Enjoy Your New Extensions

To attach the extensions, start by sectioning your hair horizontally. Clip the top section out of the way to expose the bottom layer of your hair. Secure the extensions close to the roots by snapping the clips in place.

Work your way upward in sections, attaching the extensions as you go. Once all the extensions are in place, style your hair as desired to blend the extensions with your natural hair.

Conclusion

Turning a wig into extensions is a cost-effective and creative way to achieve a new look without investing in separate hair products. By following these steps, you can repurpose your wigs—especially premium options like those from SISHAIR—into stunning extensions that suit your style. With the right tools, a bit of patience, and attention to detail, you can enjoy a fresh and versatile hair transformation that’s both practical and stylish.
