Cortex The thickest layer that gives hair its strength, elasticity, and color (due to melanin pigments). Tightly packed keratin.
Cuticle The outermost layer made of overlapping, scale-like cells that protect the inner layers from damage. Keratinized flat cells.

The cortex is the most significant layer in determining the hair’s structure and function, while the cuticle serves as a barrier against environmental factors like UV rays, chemicals, and physical wear.

3. Water and Lipids in Hair

While keratin forms the bulk of the hair structure, water and lipids also play a crucial role in maintaining its health and appearance. About 10-15% of hair is water when it is in a normal, hydrated state, although this amount can vary based on the humidity level in the environment. Water helps hair maintain flexibility and softness, preventing it from becoming brittle.

Lipids, including fatty acids and ceramides, are present on the surface of the hair shaft and within the cuticle. These lipids act as a natural conditioner, sealing in moisture and providing a smooth, glossy appearance. They also protect the hair from external pollutants and reduce friction between strands.

Hair growth stems from the hair follicle, a tiny yet complex organ located in the skin. The follicle houses living cells that divide to form the hair strand, which itself is composed of dead, keratinized cells once it emerges from the scalp.

Hair grows in three distinct phases:

  1. Anagen Phase: The active growth phase lasting 2-7 years, during which cells in the follicle rapidly divide.
  2. Catagen Phase: A transitional phase lasting a few weeks, where growth slows, and the follicle begins to shrink.
  3. Telogen Phase: The resting phase lasting a few months, during which the old hair sheds, making room for new growth.

This cyclical process ensures that hair is continually replaced, although factors like genetics, health, and age influence growth rate and density.

Understanding the composition of hair helps in selecting appropriate products and treatments for its care.
