Using protective hairstyles is not the only way to grow long healthy hair. While it is true that many people have achieved amazing lengths from protective styling, some have never got results from all their efforts. Too much protective styling leads to tangles, dryness, and breakages. For these people, we recommend low manipulation styles.
Low Manipulation Styles Help Hair Grow
Low manipulation styles are the key for speedy hair growth. Unlike protective hairstyles, low manipulation styles work on the premise that you do simple styles and manipulate your hair as little as possible. Thus, you will retain length since you will not do unnecessary damage to your hair.
Benefits of Low Manipulation Styles
1. More flexible
Protective styles can become boring after a while. As most of us suffer from serious cases of hand in hair syndrome, having your hair in a style for weeks at a time can be a major problem for many of us curlies.
However, low manipulation styles give curlies the opportunity to vary their styles and avoid becoming bored.
2. Easy to install
They are far less taxing on the hair than installing mini twists, extension braids etc. You can minimize the damage to your hair by manipulating the hair less for styling.
3. Easy to maintain the hair
Women tend to forget that they have to maintain the hair once they installed protective hairstyles, especially when it is hidden under wigs or entwined in braids. Many women will choose to style over healthy hair if the hair is hard to get.
However, if you use low manipulation styles, you can easily access and maintain hair.
Low Manipulation Hairstyles
Before styling, wash and condition your hair and detangle it thoroughly. Then, depending on your preference, apply a moisturizing conditioner or leave-in or moisturizer on your hair. If necessary, a styler or gel can be layered on top for added hold. Make sure to moisturize your hair as much as it needs, keeping your hair healthy while it is styled.
- Twist out / Braid out
Try this style on freshly cleansed hair or dry hair that has been stretched to add length and volume. Moisturize hair. Apply your styler of choice. Separate your hair into sections. Twist or braid it. You can put the ends of your hair or the entire length itself on rollers to add interest. Unravel and separate the twists gently to hide the parts and increase the volume when your hair is completely dry. Do not re-wet your hair to restyle. You can either spray it with water or add a good detangling product, then add a styler if necessary and restyle, making the hair pliable enough to detangle. Make sure to moisturize and seal your hair, especially at the ends to maintain your hair’s health.
